A Tradition Rooted in Compassion

In 2020, Captain Shane Whitley of the Pageland Police Department launched the first annual “Shop with a Cop” event—an initiative born out of a desire to support local families during the holidays and build stronger, more positive relationships between law enforcement and the youth of our community.

That inaugural year marked the beginning of what would become a heartwarming and impactful tradition. The event is more than just a holiday shopping trip—it’s a day filled with joy, connection, and meaningful one-on-one time between children and the officers who serve their community.

What is Shop with a Cop?

The Shop with a Cop program is designed to serve two key purposes:

1. To provide holiday support to families in need who may not otherwise be able to afford Christmas gifts.

2. To create a positive and lasting bond between young people and law enforcement through shared experiences, laughter, and trust-building.

Each year, a group of children is selected to participate in this special event. The day begins at the Pageland Community Center, where officers, children, and their families gather. From the moment the event kicks off, the excitement is contagious.

The children are paired with a Pageland Police officer, then head out to Roses, a local retail store, in police vehicles—complete with flashing lights and sirens that the kids get to operate themselves. For many, it’s their first time riding in a police car, and the experience alone creates memories they won’t soon forget.

A Day to Remember

Once at Roses, each child receives a spending budget and begins shopping with their assigned officer. The first priority is essential items such as clothing, jackets, shoes, and school supplies. Next, the children are encouraged to select a gift for a parent, sibling, or other loved one—teaching them the joy of giving. Finally, they’re allowed to pick out something just for themselves, whether it’s a toys, games, or items they’ve been wishing for.

After the shopping is complete, the kids ride back to the Community Center, where a festive lunch awaits. In past years, generous local businesses like PYG Pizza, and Mickey's Restaurant have graciously donated food for the event. After lunch, it continues with games, crafts, and time to relax and play with officers in a safe, welcoming space.

What makes this event truly special is the interaction between the children and the officers. It’s a chance to share stories, hear laughter, and see the sparkle in a child’s eyes—reminding everyone involved of the true spirit of community.

The Impact

The Shop with a Cop event has quickly become one of the most anticipated activities of the year for both the department and the families it serves. Officers look forward to the opportunity to connect with local youth outside of their usual duties, getting to know them personally and helping reshape how law enforcement is viewed by the next generation.

For many children, this is more than just a fun day. It’s a chance to feel seen, heard, and cared for. It’s an experience that stays with them long after the holiday season has passed.
